“ALL IN THE FAMILY”
Jim Bower is the third owner of this 1964 Chevy Impala with 29,000 original miles. It first belonged to his Aunt Margaret, who passed it over to her brother, Neil. When Uncle Neil bought the car, it sat for about 10 years before he did anything to it.
At that point, Jim offered to help his uncle on nights and weekends to get the car running in exchange for an engine and transmission Neil had. So, uncle and nephew toiled to bring Aunt Margaret’s four-door sedan back to life, and boy, does it have life now.
Gone is the original 327 cu in V8, replaced with a big-block 540 cu rat motor. Outback is a pair of Dynamax mufflers with custom 3-inch mandrel bent pipes that exit just in front of the rear wheels. It may look like a “grocery-getter”, but it sounds like a beast.
The finishing touch was the spoiler on the rear deck. When Uncle Neil came to the body shop to see what the painter had installed, he exclaimed, “That’s no spoiler! That’s a 747!”
Uncle Neil has since passed away, but Jim keeps the car going along with the memories of his Aunt & Uncle.
